Seems history needs a few more asterisks.
The "Don't Give Up the Ship" flag, a,k.a. the Commodore Perry flag, was created in 1813 to honor Captain James Lawrence, who uttered the phrase as his final command after being mortally wounded on the USS Chesapeake. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a close friend of Lawrence, had the phrase stitched in white letters onto a large blue flag, omitting the apostrophe. Perry famously flew this flag during the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, which became a significant victory.
